Friday:  Yea, it is Friday!  My goal today is to gather old, used computers and monitors that no one wants and move them to storage.  Then I'll call a recycler next week to come pick them up.  I have stuff in storage already from the summer so there is getting to be quite the stack.

Thursday:  The day is flying by with the early release and short classes.  We are fixing Coach Antel's PC and one for Mrs. Holtmeyer.  I think there are a couple of other teachers that we will reformat their machines because they are so slow.  Probably tomorrow.  Have a great afternoon off.

Wednesday:  We were successful yesterday afternoon getting Mrs. Buschjost classroom transferred to the new server.  It required me going into the registry to delete any occurance of synchroneyes that was left.  This was time consuming but it worked. 

Today we fixed several odds and ends but there are some things on my list that I can't recruit you all for.  Tell me about what you spent your hour doing today.

Friday:  Everyone should be finished with their cleaning at the elementary by Monday probably.  When you finished, please go to the MS computer lab and work on converting those machines over to the new network login.  You will run the profile wizzard on bms.  Please test Type to Learn 4 on the first couple of machines you do so we can be sure that it still works.  They will be very unhappy with us if it does not.  I do not know exactly when the lab is open but you can stop by to see and if you can't get on at least one or two machines, just come back to the office.  I will move the air compressor to the MS on Wednesday and make a list for you there.

Another thing you can do is go back to the HS classrooms that you were assigned and clean the LCD projector air filters.  There is canned air in my office that you can use.  We MUST get all the LCD's clean because they really stop working from dust--more so than the computers.

Remember I'll be gone on Monday and Tuesday.  Please stop by the office and see if they have problems you need to work on before you leave the building.  I can be reached by cell at any time.  Be good!

Thursday:  I have moved the air compressor over to the elementary and taped a sheet of paper to the cart with your assigned rooms.  A few of them have specific days you should go because the school is having an assembly and the rooms will be empty that day.  Please do a good job.  We only do this once a year.

I will be gone on Monday and Tuesday to a PowerSchool conference.  I can be reached by cell.  I intend on you cleaning PC's on those days.  If you finish early, please go back to those rooms and clean the LCD projector air filters.  The best thing to do is look on-line at the directions.  I'll try to print those off before I leave and leave them in the office.

Blogger has changed it's interface and I'm not sure I'm liking it yet.  Oh well, have a great day.

Tuesday:  I did not post yesterday because I was gone and away from a computer all day.  I went to SLU on a college visit with my son.  It was a beautiful campus.

If by chance you get finished and have time to do something else, there is a computer on the counter from the MS that needs to be fixed and the student computer in the office needs to be put on the new network as well as the one in Mrs. Henderson's room closest to the doorway. Monday: Progress is being made! I finished my technology plan and got it uploaded on Friday. I think the MS lab will be finished today. Thursday: I have the HS computer lab reserved for us most of the day so that we can get it ready for EOC testing. We do have an additional little program to run on it so that bhs has rights to the iTester program. I will be telling you about it today. We will also have to do this in Mrs. Mitchell's room and in the library. yippee!! the fun never ends. But I do know that our staff truly appreciates the work you all do as well as myself. Thank you!

Wednesday: I am so frustrated with the technology plan process. The on-line tool I have to enter it into is impossible to use. FRUSTRATION!

Progress is being made in getting iTester on all the machines but we are having trouble with accessing it from the bhs login. That will hopefully be worked out today. If not, we will be logging in as setup for all the student machines during testing.

We will also start cleaning pc's here shortly--as soon as the iTester if finished. More to come later on that topic.

Tuesday: I am concentrating on my census of technology today because it is due next week. My next thing is the technology plan that is due next week and I have not started on updating yet. (sad face)

My goal for all of you is to get a few odds and ends converted at the MS and then to concentrate on the HS labs. We need to do Ms. Mitchell's, Ms. Buschjost's, the library, and the HS lab all before EOC testing starting April 17.

Wednesday: Oops, missed blogging yesterday. I had to go straight to the elementary before school even started to help with logins and messed up e-mail after we did all the conversions on Monday evening. Thank you so much to Ben, Devun, and Grant for helping on Monday. We made good progress and that will help move this project along. We still have so much to do so please multitask (I hope you know what that means) when you are in a classroom. While you are waiting for a machine to reboot, go to a student machine and put passwords on all the accounts and the next time it reboots or you are running the wizzard, take Novell off the student machines. Multitasking is a great skill to have and will serve you well in college and in your future career. Some are always better than others at it but you can improve with practice. :~)

When you do the changes to a teachers pc for the new server, it will wipe out their password for e-mail. If I forget to give you the password, please text me and ask for it and put it in before you leave the room. I believe we will be moving to the MS later today or tomorrow.

Wednesday UPDATE

I would like to ask if anyone would be willing (hopefully everyone) to donate an evening of working on our conversion to the new server. I would provide dinner (pizza or El Jimado or something good) at 6 p.m. and then we'd work for about 2.5 to 3 hours and see how much we can get knocked out in one of the other buildings.

My proposal would be for Monday, March 26 as first choice and Wednesday, March 28 as second choice.

Everyone, please answer on your willingness and availability to do this.

Wednesday: I hope everyone had a great Spring Break. I did which makes it even harder to come back to work. At least it is Wednesday already and we will have a weekend again soon.

The conversion is going slow but we must keep moving forward. We will all be sick of it by the time it is over. I hope to get the HS teachers finished today and then move to the teachers at the MS and then over to the elementary. The student machines will be next. Please work hard and try multi-tasking. This is just like a job and you are graded mostly on working hard like it were a job. Thanks!

Tuesday: I received several hours of instruction this morning on setting up the pc's to connect to our new server. This seems like it is going to be very time consuming. we have over 400 pc's that we will need to spend about 20+ minutes on each one. I am asking that if you have a study hall during your college classes that you will consider coming to my office and helping to do this process so we can get it done in less time. Otherwise I'm really worried about how long it will take us. The teachers machines are our first priority and then we will go back and do the student machines. On top of that we really need to clean out the pc's with air. We'll see about that in April.

I have my instructions ready and Alex is testing them out right now. You will be busy for the next several weeks. :~)

March 12 Update

I've noticed many of you checking your phones and texting during class time. You have special permission to use your phones with me and not the rest of the world. There are other teachers noticing this and some of you are doing it while sitting in the lab and other students can see you. Not cool. Do not cause me to lose this privilege of using our phones to communicate with each other during class. Please use your special priviliges from this class in a responsible way and keep the phones put away except for class reasons.

Monday: Well the server is up and running but only a couple machines are attached to it at the moment. We have copied the files I had backed up off the old server onto the new one but the drives are not mapped to them and the information is not accessible yet. This is a big learning experience for me and will take some time to figure out all the ways of doing things. I hope to meet with Andrew again today.

The small laptops came in for Mrs. Abel also. My first priority today for you all is to get those setup and running. They do not have cd drives in them so installing Word and powerpoint will be off of a thumb drive. You also need to put Vixera on them from the thumb drive and setup the wireless. I think we should be able to get these done today. Devun is typing up instruction as he goes through the process this morning.

Thursday: I need to catch up on anything I can today because the new server should be here first thing tomorrow morning. Hopefully I'll know what we need to do by 10 or so.

Finishing up your Career Project: The reflection paper needs to be a paper--I believe in an English teachers mind that is at least 5 paragraphs. I think that you should be able to talk about what you are going to do for the rest of your life in 5 paragraphs. You can remind me in the paper what the career choice is that you have most likely made, why you made it, what surprised you or something you learned about that career in the research you did, what you learned from the survey you took and what your goals are in that career field, maybe 5 and 10 years down the road. Create this document on a Google Doc and SHARE it with me at lori.kempker@gmail.com. I don't like getting the e-mail links only. Those seem to get lost. This paper is due by Thursday, March 8. I will have all afternoon to read them because I only see 3 parents during parent/teacher conferences. The grade will go on 4 quarter.

I'm spending most of my time putting out little fires of things coming up and trying to get a quote on a new server and investigating enough that I get the right thing for us down the road. Friday: I did not post for yesterday since it was a short day but you need to blog today. The quarter ends next week and I'll look back through the blogs to see how many times you didn't blog--hint hint.

Today didn't start off too well with the server going down. It will be down until Monday at least. We have some other minor repairs and I want to get the monitors delivered to the MS today if it is not raining. We shall see, it may be Monday.

Thursday: It is leap day! I feel like we should all be celebrating today because there is only one of these every 4 years.

Yesterday Emily, Grant, and I helped the 2nd graders with the Chromebooks--my what a difference from the 5th grade. Today we are helping the 4th grade. Occasionally you may be sent to work with one of these classes to help them on projects and answer questions. I have a Chromebook in my office for you to work on and get familiar with it.

Ben figured out how to set them up to print to the new printer so we are going to have to do this for each account. We will start with all 5th graders. We can do this from any computer with Google chrome on it.

I am also going to give the computer you all work on to FLCN and move mine to your spot and I'll have a new Win 7 machine. Not really looking forward to this but it is a necessity at some point.

The nComputing devices are working. We will probably deliver and set up on Friday. Tomorrow is a short day.

I MUST have permission slips signed now in order for me to text you and vice versa as of March 1. I have the permission slips ready to go. Be sure to get one from me and bring it back TOMORROW.

Tuesday: Well we put the first set of chromebooks in the hands of 5th graders yesterday and one class of 8th grade. Overall things went well--there were a few hitches with logins and some lag time with the router and/or bandwidth and all those hitting the web at the same time. Today we are going to help the 2nd grade at 1 p.m. and tomorrow the 4th grade at 1:30.

I also got the memory in for the two machines we are going to set up in the MS with the nComputing devices. One is installed and working (YEAH!) and we will get the other one going today also. We will be delivering those later this week.

Make sure you talk to me about your website and questionnaire. I think all of you have changes to make on the questionnaire before we send it out to someone. I made copies of the evalluation form so that I could keep one and you have one since I haven't finished them yet. I did enter the website grades to the grade book.

Saturday: Well, I'm having an exciting Saturday evening. I graded all of your web sites this morning and looked at all the questionnaires that I could find. I cannot find any from Ben, Emily, or Grant. I checked my e-mail and shared documents. You all need to always use my lori.kempker@gmail account. Some went to my blairoaks.k12.mo.us account and others were e-mailed and other shared documents.

Here's the deal--if you create something in Google--share it with me using the gmail account above. Then I can put it into folders and find it easily. When you e-mail it, it is just a link and then I can't store it with the others. So if you have not shared your document(s), go back and do that now. I need to talk to each of you about your project before we send the questionnaires. Hopefully that will get done this week.

Friday: What a quick week. Still plugging along with Chromebook stuff. On Monday we are going to help the 5th grade, Tuesday the 2nd grade and Wednesday the 4th grade with their new Chromebooks. I don't know what hours for sure on all of them but Monday will be 1, 2, 5, and 6th hours. So you guys plan on being in the MS in Ms. Maples room. I will remind you.

Thursday: well, we are not getting the "Cloud Printer" to work and Google has not returned my call on the apps question I have for the Chromebooks. I'm feeling frustration! We are setting up all the 5th grade accounts and some 8th grade. That will take pretty much all day I think. (for you all anyway)

Wednesday: already half-way through the week. I am trying to figure out all the chromebook stuff and how to get the apps to appear on the machines. It isn't working because I can't find the instructions. I did realize that I haven't gone all the way through the setup steps so as I do that this morning, maybe I'll figure it out. I also put a phone call in to Google.

I have to take my son to have some allergy tests done this morning so I'll be leaving around 10:30 and be back around 1 probably. I want to get the other chromebooks delivered to the elementary and put them in the cart if possible. I'll leave written instructions or text you during your class.

I apologize for not delving into your projects fully yet. I feel that I must get the chomebooks taken care of first and then I'll direct my attention that way. That's why this is an independent class--lack of supervision from your instructor. :)

Tuesday: I hope everyone had a great extendend break. I had lots of company at my house so I didn't get much accomplished but it was fun. My husband and I went and test drove an SUV yesterday and I fell in love with the Acadia.

Goals for the week: Get all the Chromebooks delivered and set up in the carts. I also have to get the admin portion of it working correctly so that is a goal for today. I also need to order monitors and mice as we are going to set up another nComputing device for the MS. I will also need to do some work with core data and EOC preparation this week.

Tomorrow I may be gone from 10:30 till ??. my son is having allergy testing done. If my husband can go with him, then I'll be here. Have a good day.

Thursday: The conference I went to was great! I learned lots of new technology and some cool websites. I'm sure I'll be sharing some of them with you. I need to spend a little time looking over them first.

As for your projects, I've been crazy busy and haven't looked at the websites but will do so soon. (time to spruce them up if they are not top-notch already) Share your questions/forms with me so that I can look over them and then next week I'll work with Mrs. Shanley to find people for you to send them to. Oh yea, please make sure you did not do any copying and pasting into your web site. I truly frown apon that. Everything needs to be in your own words.

Monday: Blogging late as usual. I've been so rushed today with getting a bunch of stuff done before going to my conference the next two days and now getting out early has shortened it even more. I've been trying to get the wireless set up for the Chromebook carts--done, an emergency phone list ready for coach Drehle for football--done, directions, hotel reservation confirmation, conference sessions, etc... for the 7 of us going tomorrow--half done! I can finish that at home.

I want you to work on your Google form for your project while I am gone. I do not have Grant or Kellen's web site yet. :( Where is it? Also write a reflection paper about what you learned aobout your career research, what you think you are going to do and where you are going to do it at (school). What questions do you still have about this career choice, are you nervous that you'll go to school for years and then not like it, what are alternatives etc... My son graduated with a degree in Marketing and a Master in Business Administration and is working for himself right now but he learned how to make a business plan, approach the banks, etc... Do you have an ultimate goal in life?

Tuesday: I have decided that since I will be gone Tuesday and Wednesday of next week that you can work on your Google forms questions and your reflection paper while I am gone. I do want you to have the website finished by this Friday and to share it with me by the end of the day. The other 2 parts can be done next week. Monday: Well, Friday did not go so well and I was extremely busy this morning with phone calls from cooks, secretaries, teachers, etc... about the new PowerSchool. I was here on Friday night until 11 p.m. getting the server back up and running. We had multiple problems that we had to work through and all of them took hours. Had it gone smoothly, we should have been done by 4 p.m. :(

Do not forget that your websites are due at the end of the week. I won't be here part or all of the day Friday, so make sure you share your website with me on Google or e-mail me the web address. I will be sure to check that I have them by the end of the day. They won't be graded that fast but I'll check to be sure you are on time.

Friday: Normally I'm happy about Friday's but I am wiping out the PowerSchool server and upgrading it to Windows2008 server and PowerSchool 7. I have Scott coming to actually do the work but I'll be involved and it makes me very nervous. I am trying to get as much backed up as possible in case of disaster. I have run a transcript for every hs student, exported all the teacher grades into pdf files, and I'm running the backups that they recommend from the server. I'll be here all weekend if it doesn't go well.

Today you can expiriment with a Chromebook if you would like or work on your project. I will let you know if I need you to go some place. I am running to eat lunch with my son today for Catholic Schools week so I'll be gone for a bit around noon.

Thursday: THE CHROMEBOOKS ARE HERE! They arrived yesterday around lunch time and as of 9 a.m. today, they are all unboxed and we are updating the first dozen or so. It takes over an hour to update them after turning them on and finding the wireless. So it is a slow process to start with but once they are updated, all should go well. If you need to work on your website, do so while we are waiting or at home. Don't wait until the last minute.

Wednesday: I got all of the users uploaded to the Google Apps dashboard with the help of Ben, Caleb, Curtis, and Alex who helped type in the e-mail addresses for every student in 3rd through 11th grade. We will see if we add seniors this year. I don't think they will use it much so I don't think we will need to with only 4 months of school left.

Chromebooks will be here tomorrow so get your web sites and research finished. I will be gone part or all of the day on Feb. 10 so you must share your site with me or e-mail me the address of the site by that day.

Tuesday: Today is Lana's last day working at Blair Oaks. So if you go by the office, tell her goodbye. I got an e-mail today that the Chromebooks have been shipped and we shoould have them in hand by Thursday. Now I'm pressed to figure out how to make the user accounts. So I'm studying the Google Apps instructions today. I have already spent a lot of time in there but there is so much information. Again, get busy with your project because when the Chromebooks arrive, we will work on them.

Today I am trying to find out about and fix some problems with the new nursing program called SNAP. Friday: TGIF I'm sure you all get excited when you get a paycheck, it doesn't change too much many years down the road and today is payday.

Everyone is taking the DOS quiz today. I plan on trying to get them graded and on the gradebook today but no promises. You know how much my day gets interrupted. I am listening to a webinar today also.

Thursday: There will be a DOS test tomorrow during your hour. It will be very similar to the worksheet that I gave you. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me today.

I have several projects going on that I wish you could help me with--the new Nurse's program, our Google Apps for Education stuff, some core data, etc...--but you can't. So I'm pretty much glued to the computer this week.

We will be starting a new project for next week. I will explain it to you today or tomorrow because unfortunately the tooth saga continues. I now have to have the tooth pulled on Monday so I won't be here at all that day. Depending on how things go, I'll see if I'm here Tuesday.

Tuesday: I hope everyone enjoyed their extra day off. It was so warm, my husband and I took a long walk and grilled out for dinner.

I am very busy this week with core data, MAP testing uploads, Google application, and a new Nurse's program. I want everyone to get their DOS worksheet finished and I will leave an answer key for you to check the worksheet. I want you to take the test on Friday. If you have questions, or do not understand, you must ask. I will explain.

I now have a dental appt. at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. I have a tooth that has been killing me for 2 weeks and making me have bad headaches, jaw pain, etc... I am hopefully going to get it fixed tomorrow. They are working me in so it might be an all day affair. I plan on coming in at 7:30 to check e-mail and get things lined up for the day. This is why I cannot now go over the DOS sheet with you in person but will do so on Thursday if you have any of them wrong. You can text me on Wed. and if I'm able, I'll text you back. Friday: I hope everyone enjoyed their extra day off with the snow. My son tried to sleigh ride down our hill and it was ok on the first pass but then the grass was in the way and he'd have to move.

I have been approved for the Chromebooks and am in the process today of obtaining a new domain name and then applying for a Google Apps for Education account. This has to be done before I can purchase the Chromebooks. I'll let you know the progress next week.

Wednesday: I should hear from Mr. Jones today if we will be getting money for the Chromebook labs and I am going to return a call from Google about these today also. Moving along....

If I don't have anything for you to fix today, then you should continue exploring the DOS tutorial. I will be adding a few commands to your handout as we go along. I think I talked to most of you about the change directory commands of cd.. and cd\. If I did not or you can't remember, be sure to ask me. Another one I want to add is Type. Remind me to show you this DOS command. I am also looking for some Web based tutorials for extra practice. I'll let you know what I find.

Tuesday: This is a slow time of the year so I am giving you another assignment. I think that it is important that you understand DOS if you are going to have any type of career in computers. I know all of you are not, but this will make you very knowledgeable in the area. I have a handout for everyone and a very old little program that will teach you about DOS commands. Remember that at one time, computers did not have mice or a Windows interface and everything was typed into the computer as a command. You are going to learn some of those basic commands. I will get you started and work with you a little bit each day that I can to get you to understand these commands. There will be a test at the end. Have a great day.

Monday: I hope everyone had a good weekend. I have two meetings this morning. At 9 I am meeting with Mrs. Winslow about technology for her building and then at 10:30 I am meeting with Dr. Jones and asking for money to fulfill Mrs. Winslow and Mrs. Gampher's wishes. I think I will be asking for an iPad lab and a Google Chromebook lab. This will give us lots to do in the next couple of months if it happens.





I do not have a lot for you to do today so bring some homework. I will be coming up with another project very soon.

Friday: I learned a lot yesterday about the Google Chromebook and really like them. I would love to get a cart of 30 for the Middle School. I hope to talk to Ms. Gampher today about the possibility. These books are a cross between a tablet and a laptop. They do not have any operating system on them, they connect directly to the Internet. So all of your tasks are saved to the cloud and you can access it from anywhere. So you would have to use Google Docs for everything and gmail for your e-mail. There were also tons of apps that you could download for free which made it very much like a tablet. I found lots of education and fun things that could be downloaded. The cost is more than I was hoping for but we'll see how that goes with the district.

If you think any part of the school buildings was missed from our TDSS scan, please let me know. I'll be e-mailing the teachers today to have them do their own. We might have to help some of those who are scared to try things.

Thursday: I almost forgot to blog this morning. I'm on my way to Columbia for a workshop on Google Chrome Books. I'll let you know what I learn.

We need to finish the scan of student machines. You may need to communicate with each other because I didn't get to talk to a couple of people yesterday to see what they finished. This is what I think still needs to be done:

Devun & Ben work on the basement of the elementary. There is a lab down there so I think it may take almost 2 hours.
Caleb work on the upper level of the Middle School. Do everything but the lab. I would like for you to do all the PC's in the office there also.
Curtis--you were working on the hs library and I don't know where you stopped so finish up the library.
Alex--Work in Ms. Mitchell's room. Do all the open pc's before they go to lunch and then you can finish.
Grant & Emily work in the MS lab getting all those pc's finished.
Kellen work in Mrs. Sharon Buschjost room and do all those pc's.

Wednesday: It is always nice starting school half way through the week. I hope everyone had a great Christmas break and that Santa was good to you. I really enjoyed lots of family time.

We are going to be scanning all of the student PC's over the next couple of days for a virus root kit that has hit our school. The FBI identified us to Morenet and Morenet contacted me. I have already found it on one of the PC's in the HS and one in the MS. I will be gone tomorrow to a workshop in Columbia on Google Chrome Books. I will leave a list on the blog at the end of today to let everyone know what they need to do tomorrow--probably scan pc's. :)
